I was watching youtube the other day and a video came on with a top 10 list for (can’t recall what) but one item in the list caught my attention. It was a reference to laughter and sleep. So I did a little digging and found that there are so many more benefits to laughing than I ever knew. There are so many in fact, that I will only list the ones that appealed to me the most. But at the end of the list are 3 resources I pulled from, so you can directly access more information.
Some great benefits I was excited to find:
Sleep: 15 minutes of laughter equals the benefit of 2 hours sleep.
Stress Hormone Levels: You benefit from reducing the level of stress hormones your body produces because hormone-level reduction simultaneously cuts the anxiety and stress impacting your body. Additionally, the reduction of stress hormones in your body may result in higher immune system performance
Relax and Recharge: Laughter reduces stress and increases energy, enabling you to stay focused and accomplish more.
Endorphins : Laughter enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air, stimulates your heart, lungs and muscles, and increases the endorphins that are released by your brain. Endorphins are also the body’s natural pain killers. By laughing, you can release endorphins, which can help ease chronic pain and make you feel good all over.
Tension: Laughter can also stimulate circulation and aid muscle relaxation, both of which can help reduce some of the physical symptoms of stress.
Immune System: Negative thoughts manifest into chemical reactions that can affect your body by bringing more stress into your system and decreasing your immunity. In contrast, positive thoughts can actually release neuropeptides that help fight stress and potentially more-serious illnesses.
Situations & People: Laughter can also make it easier to cope with difficult situations. It also helps you connect with other people.
Mood: Many people experience depression, sometimes due to chronic illnesses. Laughter can help lessen your depression and anxiety and may make you feel happier.
Abs: One of the benefits of laughter is that it can help you tone your abs. When you are laughing, the muscles in your stomach expand and contract, similar to when you intentionally exercise your abs.
